Your metabolic health is a result of how your body processes sugars and fats, which indicates your risk of disease. Poor metabolic health is increasing at an unprecedented rate, including conditions such as obesity, heart disease, stroke, Type 2 diabetes, kidney disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and cancer.
Your metabolic fitness relates to how efficiently your body converts the sugars and fats into energy, which is important for maintaining healthy weight, improving physical performance and lowering the risk of these growing conditions.
Derived from the Japanese Shinto purification ritual, ‘Misogi’ involves washing the body in cold water or standing under a waterfall. The ritual is said to cleanse the mind and body, and prepare the soul for the year ahead.
The ritual has now evolved into a personal quest or annual challenge, although there is no set format for how to do it. The difficulty level depends on the individual’s preparation and can change over time. Some examples of Misogi challenges include:
Inspired by the concept of Misogi, our founder, Damini Patel, has designed House of Misogi™ to be a community-driven safe space that helps individuals take back control of their physical and mental health by recognising what part of their being requires the most attention and thereby allowing them to confidently pursue goals and challenges that previously felt too out of reach.
At the heart of House of Misogi™ is a fitness-testing service that offers VO2 Max and Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) tests. These assessments provide an accurate picture of an individual’s cardio-respiratory and metabolic fitness; and are considered to be the best indicators of good cardiovascular health and aerobic endurance.
It is becoming alarmingly important to stay in the know about our metabolic health. If your result is low, it can be viewed as an indicator of higher risk in developing metabolic dysfunction and possibly the existence of a long-term condition.
At House of Misogi, we encourage and guide our clients and community on how to improve and get their metabolic health in control, which is the key for longevity. Setting yourself a 'Misogi' and regularly having your VO2 Max and RMR tested is one of the best ways to improve your metabolic health in all its facets and to live a happier and healthier life.
*Our RMR testing can be offered as a mobile service. If you have a treadmill or stationary bike we can also offer VO2 Max testing as a mobile service too. Please book in a consultation if you would like to arrange this at a more convenient location for you.
A Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) gives the most accurate and personalised report on your body’s current metabolic health.
The RMR test gives you data on how much energy in calories your body burns at rest and determines what your personal caloric and exercise needs are - all measured in real time!
The RMR test requires you to arrive to your appointment fasted for at least 3-5 hours (the longer the better). This test does not require any exercise.
It takes approximately 20 minutes to conduct the test, following which, we will provide you with your report and guidance on setting your Misogi during the consultation.
An Active Metabolic Rate (AMR), more commonly known as a VO2 Max test, measures the maximum amount of oxygen your body can consume in a single minute during intense exercise, which is a key indicator of your cardiorespiratory or aerobic health, physical endurance, performance and metabolic fitness.
Knowing your VO2 Max and understanding how to improve it is a gold standard for assessing cardiovascular health, making it one of the most valuable health assessments for everyone.
The AMR/VO2 Max test requires you to arrive to your appointment fasted for 3-5 hours and exercise on a stationary bike for approximately 8-12 minutes. This test begins with a warm-up on the bike and then the intensity is increased over approximately 8-12 minutes until you cannot go any longer.
For this reason, the VO2 Max test can be quite intense and not suitable for certain clients with pre-existing health conditions. Please carefully read through the health conditions that are not suitable for this test, in which case booking an RMR-only test is the safest and best option.
We strive to offer a range of suitable fitness testing options, with additional language support in English, Hindi & Gujarati. Please specify your preferences when booking.

You will be greeted and taken through your assessment by a trained specialist and your report will be given to you and explained to you as soon as the assessment is complete.
You will need 60 minutes for a single test or 90 minutes if you are doing both RMR and AMR testing.
For RMR testing you should be fasted (no food or caffeine) for 5 hours or overnight prior; for a VO2 Max test, a minimum of 3 hours fasted is required (ideally 5 hours).
Please arrive in comfortable clothing, if you are doing an active assessment, wear something you don’t mind breaking a sweat in and can cycle in. Please also bring a bottle of water and a snack for once the assessment is complete as you will be required to fast prior to the appointment.
We recommend going for both RMR and AMR testing to get a full picture of your metabolic status and overall fitness. This is the most important starting point for a Misogi or any health endeavours you wish to take on. These results can be shared with your healthcare/medical professional and/or personal trainer for them to give you more personalised advice and programmes.
